briym confidentiality policy in schools

briym recognises the importance of confidentiality for students using their service in schools and is informed by the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

It is widely recognised within UK law that therapists and counsellors owe a duty of confidence to their clients because of the special nature of the relationship, and that maintaining the trust and privacy of personal information is a legitimate expectation for the client.

Principles

All information relating to students is regarded as confidential and is kept securely. All staff working with briym adhere to maintain the confidentiality of every person using the service.

briym has a duty of carer to all students they see. There may be exceptional circumstances in which there is a significant concern of a risk of serious harm to the student or another person. In such an event it may be necessary for information to be shared with other professionals. In such circumstances disclosures may also be shared with parents/carers, unless this puts the student at further risk.

Access to student records

Students have the right to see information about them. The only exception is if the information would be likely to put them at risk of harm.

briym does not provide access to student records if requested by other parties, unless it is with the explicit consent of the student.
